U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized China’s decision to raise tariffs on U.S. goods to 84%, calling it “unfortunate” in response to escalating trade tensions. Bessent accused China of unfair trade practices and having the most imbalanced economy in history. The Chinese government increased tariffs following the Trump administration’s move to raise tariffs on Chinese imports to 104%. Despite the escalating trade war, equity markets saw slight gains, with the Dow Jones up 0.20%, the S&P 500 up 0.5%, and the Nasdaq 100 up 1.2%. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust was up 0.2%.
