The ongoing trial in the District of Columbia federal court revealed that Mark Zuckerberg considered spinning off Instagram in 2018 due to antitrust concerns. The Federal Trade Commission presented an email from Zuckerberg during the trial, which focuses on Facebook’s alleged social networking monopoly. Zuckerberg mentioned that spinning off Instagram might be necessary to achieve important goals. Meta, formerly Facebook, acquired Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion. Zuckerberg testified that buying Instagram followed unsuccessful attempts to build multiple apps. If the FTC succeeds, Meta may be forced to sell Instagram and WhatsApp.
