The ACEA and Eurelectric are calling for urgent reform and investment in Europe’s electricity grids to support the deployment of charging infrastructure for heavy-duty vehicles. This comes as the EU aims to increase the number of zero-emission trucks and buses by 2030, with up to one-third of new registrations expected to be zero-emission vehicles. Existing grid limitations, permitting delays, and regulatory challenges are hindering progress. The ACEA and Eurelectric emphasize the need to involve distribution system operators in grid planning and advocate for a demand-driven approach to grid investments. Policy recommendations include improved transparency, simplified permitting procedures, anticipatory investments, and flexible connection options. The importance of enabling megawatt charging systems and aligning electricity pricing structures to support electric HDVs is highlighted. ACEA and Eurelectric are calling on EU institutions and member states to provide the essential infrastructure for a decarbonized future in road transport in Europe. ACEA represents 16 major Europe-based vehicle manufacturers and stresses the importance of a fit-for-purpose charging network for heavy-duty vehicles to decarbonize road transport effectively.
