Slovenia’s Finance Ministry considers imposing a 25% tax on crypto trading profits for residents, exempting crypto-to-crypto trades and transfers between wallets. Tax would align with existing laws, requiring taxpayers to keep transaction records. Finance Minister deems it illogical that crypto trading isn’t taxed currently. Lawmaker argues new tax could stifle crypto growth in the country.
Public consultation on the proposal runs until May 5, with potential implementation on Jan. 1, 2026. Slovenia previously introduced a 10% tax on crypto withdrawals and payments in 2023. Capital gains from occasional trading are currently untaxed. Crypto activity can be tax-exempt if considered a hobby, while business activities like mining or staking are subject to income tax.
A previous bill proposed a 5% tax on profits over 10,000 euros but was not passed. Slovenia issued the EU’s first digital sovereign bond in 2021. The country is projected to have around 98,000 crypto users in 2025, with a market revenue of $2.8 million. Changes in crypto laws worldwide are explored in a 2025 magazine feature.
