Record bauxite exports from Guinea to China in Q1 2025, highlighting growing Chinese influence

Guinea’s bauxite exports surged to a record 48.6 million tonnes in Q1 2025, up 39% despite regulatory challenges. The country dispatched 312 vessels, a significant increase from the previous year. Chinese demand continues to drive growth in the sector, with most bauxite being shipped to China.
Chinese companies like Société Minière de Boké (SMB) and Chalco saw significant increases in bauxite shipments from Guinea. China’s aluminium production also rose by 4% in the first five months of 2025. The data underscores China’s growing influence over Guinea’s bauxite industry and global aluminium production.
In a move to consolidate control over mining resources, Guinea’s military government canceled 129 exploration permits in May 2025. The country has been expanding its port infrastructure to meet the rising demand for bauxite, solidifying its position as a key global supplier of the mineral.
